I am currently doing a Bible Study called "Stepping Up" by Beth Moore which goes through the Psalms of Ascent (Psalm 120 through 134). This morning I was doing the section on Psalm 125, and specifically verse 1 which says, "Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion. It cannot be shaken; it remains forever."
The Hebrew word for "trust" can be defined as "confident, secure, sure". Based on this definition, Beth went into some detail on where our security is found by using a cross reference to another Psalm that also includes a metaphor to a strong mountain, Psalm 30:6-7. "When I was secure, I said, 'I will never be shaken.' LORD, when You showed Your favor, You made me stand like a strong mountain; when You hid Your face, I was terrified." Notice the past tense security that the Psalmist (David) is speaking about. The New King James translation draws a clearer picture, "Now in my prosperity I said, 'I shall never be moved.' LORD, by Your favor You have made my mountain stand strong; You hid Your face, and I was troubled."
This is what Beth Moore had to say in response to these verses which completely blew my mind:
"Consider this carefully: David was the first to ascribe his prosperity to the Lord, but somewhere along the way he mistakenly placed his security in the blessing of God rather than God Himself. We often know enough not to ascribe our security to carnal, worldly things. Our greater and slyer temptation is to place our security in blessings we readily credit to the Lord."
"Even if our security is in something God has given us -- our gifts, talent, loved ones, church family, consistent victory, passion for His Word -- our seemingly secure mountain ultimately will fall into the sea. We can grow secure in the favor God has shown us, but God's favor and His person are not synonymous. If our trust is in manifestations of God's favor rather than God Himself, we will crumble like dry clay when He calls us to walk a distance of our journey entirely by faith and not by sight....Mountain-like security only comes from trusting God, not what He's done for us or given us, however glorious and eternal those things may be."
Whoa....that thought totally blew my mind! Do I do that...find my security in the blessings God has given me (my family, our home, my job, my kids, my church) and not in God himself??? Do you? Something to think and pray about!
